Society of Fellows

“Fellows” programs are among the most utilized fundraising techniques of Bar Foundations around the country, designed to cultivate individual lawyer and professional gifts over a multi-year period. Replicated from a model developed by the American Bar Foundation, “Fellows” programs are, in essence, donor societies, created to recognize attorneys, judges, and other professionals and public servants who have demonstrated outstanding dedication to the welfare of their communities.

Funds raised through the Society of Fellows help sustain Project Youth OCBF’s mission of keeping at-risk youth out of jail, in school, healthy and drug free through education, counseling, mentoring, and family strengthening. Each year, Project Youth hosts a Society of Fellows event to honor its members, selecting one member to receive the Distinguished Fellows Award and one judicial member to receive the Distinguished Judicial Fellows Award. Upon initiation, Fellows receive a Certificate of Membership, a Society of Fellows lapel pin that identifies them as a Fellow member, and recognition at Project Youth events & in publications. To find out more information about the Society of Fellows, please contact Nancy Garcia, Associate Director, via email at or by phone at (714) 480-1925, ext. 108.

9th Annual Society of Fellows Distinguished Judicial Fellow Award

The 9th Annual Society of Fellows Distinguished Judicial Fellow Award recipient of 2017 was The Honorable Gail A. Andler (Ret.), recognized for her outstanding efforts on behalf of the Orange County Community and her example of the values Project Youth OCBF stands for. She has always been a model of hard work, honesty and fairness in the Orange County legal community.

Judge Andler spent more than 22 years on the Orange County Superior Court where she served from 2007-2017 on the Complex Civil Litigation Panel. Judge Andler has experience in business, construction defect, personal injury, family law, and eminent domain disputes. She has managed large coordinated and consolidated product defect and injury cases in the pharmaceutical, medical device, and automotive industries, in addition to consumer and employment class actions and PAGA cases. Her time with the court also included serving two terms as the Presiding Judge of the Superior Court’s Appellate Division and she is the past President of the American College of Business Court Judges.

Prior to her appointment to the bench, Judge Andler represented individuals and closely held corporations in business and real estate litigation, including developers and design professionals. She also gained substantial jury trial experience as a prosecutor.

Judge Andler has been praised by attorneys for her commitment to resolution and her creativity. As a judge, she worked with parties to find common ground and create efficiencies in the legal process.

We thank Judge Andler for her outstanding services to the Orange County Community. In honor of Judge Andler and her well-deserved receipt of the Society of Fellows Distinguished Judicial Fellow Award, JAMS has donated a $500 college scholarship in her name to be given to one of Project Youth’s Higher Education Mentoring Program’s 2018 graduates.

10th Annual Society of Fellows Distinguished Fellow Award

The 10th Annual Society of Fellows Distinguished Fellow Award of 2017 went to Michael T. Hornak, who has diligently worked to sustain Project Youth’s Society of Fellows, for his outstanding services on behalf of Project Youth OCBF and the Orange County community.

Mike is a senior partner and former managing partner at Rutan & Tucker, where he is Co-Chair of the firm’s Cybersecurity, Privacy and Corporate Governance Practice Group and Unfair Competition/Class Action Defense Group. He has a broad range of experience in litigating commercial and business matters. Mike’s expertise extends to intellectual property disputes, shareholder and partner governance, contract and tort claims, and the defense of consumer and shareholder class actions.

Mike is actively engaged in the Orange County community and recognized for his contributions by business and government. A longtime supporter of Project Youth and Society of Fellows member, he served as Project Youth OCBF President in 2001 and on the Board of Directors for many years. He is a valued Project Youth volunteer and friend and we know the entire Orange County community, not just the legal community, is fortunate to have him working so hard for its betterment. He is extremely well known and liked for good reason.

As one of Project Youth’s Founding Fellows, Mike strongly believes that investing in the prevention and early intervention programs of Project Youth betters our community and provides compelling evidence of the need to support the Society of Fellows. To that end, he has been instrumental to the Society’s growth and development since joining near its inception.

2018 Society of Fellows Chairman’s Message

Daniel S. Robinson, Jr.

As the 2018 Chair of Project Youth OCBF’s Society of Fellows, I want to thank all Society of Fellows Members for their continued support of our incredible organization and its charitable youth programs.  Since 2007, the Society’s 230 members have provided over $410,000 in funds directly to help Project Youth OCBF fulfill its mission to empower Orange County youth.

Each Society of Fellows Member should be proud that their contributions have helped make a direct and positive impact on our programs.  For example, our Higher Education Mentoring Program helps youth from low income backgrounds attend and graduate from college; Project SELF gives high school students an opportunity to work for local law firms and businesses through summer internships; and our SHORTSTOP and STOP SHORT of Addiction programs keep at-risk youth off drugs, healthy and out of jail.

This year, we are giving Society of Fellows Members an opportunity to participate in our new DONOR WALL program which supports the capital campaign for our new Santa Ana headquarters.  The DONOR WALL will honor all Board Members and Society of Fellows Members who make a pledge of $5,000 or more to the capital campaign by December 31, 2018.  It will be installed at the entrance of Project Youth OCBF’s new Santa Ana building.  To join the DONOR WALL or get more information about making a pledge, please contact Karen Ruan at

Thanks again for your support and commitment to Project Youth OCBF.
